Bill Cosby Supports "Rising Stars in Education" at Penn
Many of us have fond memories of a favorite teacher, and Bill Cosby is no exception. In fact, it is Cosby's life-long sense of gratitude to a special teacher and his belief that we must find ways to encourage teaching excellence that inspired the famed entertainer to host a benefit for Penn's Graduate School of Education. The performance, held June 19 at the Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, raised $1,067,000 to support fellowships for students who pledge to teach in the School District of Philadelphia.
More than 950 people joined Bill Cosby, Penn President Judith Rodin, GSE Dean Susan Fuhrman, and others at "An Evening with Bill Cosby" an event that paid tribute to Cosby's sixth-grade teacher, Mary Forchic, and to the late Tito Puente, Sr., two people who had a profound influence on his life. With his characteristic blend of humor, compasion, and common sense, Bill Cosby called attention to the ways good teachers can offer lifelong inspiration. "His performance came straight from the heart," said Susan Danilow, CW'74, G'74, GSE Overseer and Event Co-Chair, "and it set the mood for the entire evening."
