The Gift of Opportunity Donors and Scholars Celebrate Penn and Each Other

Some 100 scholarship donors and 50 student recipients gathered at The Penn Club in New York on March 5 to celebrate their commitment to education, to Penn, and to each other. The two student speakers focused on making the most of opportunities and resources afforded them by their scholarships.

"The mentoring, the guidance, and the example provided by my donor," said Sarah Tudryn, C'02, second-time David Pottruck Scholar, "gives my scholarship its highest value." In response to this encouragement and to "the unlimited opportunity" offered by the University, Sarah earned Academic All-American and Dean's List honors, helped the gymnastics team win two Ivy League championships, and became deeply engaged with The Fox Leadership Program.

Shaun Gonzales, C'03, a George A. Weiss Leadership Scholar, said that his student trip to India, including some of its most impoverished areas, strengthened his resolve to tap Penn's great resources of knowledge to help those in need. With a double major in International Relations and South Asia Regional Studies, Shaun is a co-founder of Cipactli (the first Latino Honor Society in the Ivy League), a volunteer at Central High School, and Political Chair of the United Minorities Council. He thanked Penn supporters for "creating opportunity and for realizing the true value of Penn's wealth."
