Dr. John J. McMullen Endows Fellowship at Penn Engineering
Though much has changed
in the six decades since
Dr. John J. McMullen graduated
from the United States Naval
Academy, one thing remains
consistent —"it is essential," he
says, "that the young graduates
of the Naval Academy have the
finest education possible."
Noting the "ever increasing
importance of technology in
our new Navy," Dr. McMullen
has pledged $1 million to the University
to endow a fellowship that will allow
young naval officers to pursue a master’s
degree at Penn Engineering.
"Dr. McMullen’s visionary and
generous gesture," says SEAS Dean
Eduardo Glandt, "will greatly enrich the
lives of these superbly educated young
people by furthering their exposure to
cutting-edge technologies."
Since 1998, Dr. McMullen, who
Dr. John J. McMullen holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering, an M.S. in Naval Architecture and
Marine Engineering, and a Doctor of
Mechanical Engineering, has provided
annual term support to send a graduate of
the Naval Academy to Penn Engineering
to earn a master’s degree. This latest gift
permanently endows the program.
In making the gift, Dr. McMullen
said that he was "pleased to establish
this Fellowship at the University of
Pennsylvania for the further education
of young naval officers selected by the
United States Naval Academy."
Dean Glandt calls it "a privilege" to
educate the Naval Academy’s outstanding
officers and looks forward to continuing
the relationship. "Both institutions," he
notes, "share a commitment to excellence
and to shaping leaders who possess the
intellectual strength and analytical skill to
be thoughtful and effective."
If Dr. McMullen’s life is any example,
McMullen Fellows will shape the world
in significant ways. After serving 14 years in the U.S. Navy, Dr. McMullen went on
to demonstrate his leadership on many
fronts — as Chief of the Office of Ship
Construction and Repair in the U.S.
Maritime Administration; founder of
John J. McMullen Associates, one of the
most successful Naval architectural firms
in the U.S.; Chairman, President and
CEO of United States Lines, one of our
nation’s foremost shipping companies;
owner of Norton Lilly International, a
leading steamship agency company; as
well as numerous other public and
private ventures.
He was also majority-owner of the
Houston Astros and went on to purchase
the Colorado Rockies hockey team,
which re-emerged as the New Jersey
Devils, as a "form of public service to
his native state and home community."
Dr. McMullen’s leadership, dedication,
and commitment to the Devils were
rewarded with two Stanley Cup
Championships in 1995 and 2000. |
