Paul Kelly Creates Chair, Supports Scholarships, Fine Arts
University Trustee and SAS Overseer Paul K. Kelly, C'62, WG'64, expanded his philanthropic ties to Penn with a pledge of $3 million that reflects, in President Rodin's words, "his keen understanding of the value of many areas that are critical to a Penn education."
The new commitment will endow a Kelly Family Professorship in English, provide support for both Kelly Writers House and a new undergraduate program in the fine arts, and underwrite scholarships, summer internships, and studies abroad for students in the Huntsman Program in International Studies and Business. "Paul is very committed to enhancing the many interdisciplinary offerings that make Penn unique," said SAS Dean Samuel H. Preston. "We are grateful for his vision and generosity."
Kelly's gift reflects his abiding interest in the art and style of writing. The new Kelly Family Chair is English professor and Writers House Director Al Filreis, an appointment that "delighted" Kelly. "No one can surpass Al's enthusiasm, vision, and achievements for undergraduate education and for writing," he said. "I can't think of a faculty more worthy of this chair."
Meanwhile, Mr. Kelly further strengthened his chief campus legacy, the highly successful Kelly Writers House, with the addition of another Visiting Fellowship. He also supplemented his long-standing support for financial aid by creating a third Challenge Fund. Thanks to his daughter Brooke, C'01, a fine arts major Kelly also pledged $100,000 to establish the Kelly Family Studio Arts Term Fund in the Graduate School of Fine Arts.
