Fisher Hassenfeld College House
A New World for Penn Undergraduates

Jerome, W'53, and Anne Fisher and Alan Hassenfeld, C'70, have made a commitment to both tradition and transformation through their lead gift to the recently completed Quadrangle Renewal Project. In recognition of the major impact they have had on the $75 million project, the Fisher Hassenfeld College House and Memorial Tower Gate have been named in their honor.

Through the four-year Quad Renewal Project, buildings originally constructed from 1895 to 1900 have been reconfigured to create spaces supporting College House life. As one of the oldest parts of the historic Quad, with only one public space before renovation, Fisher Hassenfled has undergone dramatic changes. In addition to air conditioning and beautiful landscaping, it now features lounges, computer labs, study and seminar rooms, music practice rooms, and other public areas where students can interact, hang out, and get to know each other.

Jerome Fisher says that while he is delighted by all the physical improvements, he is really thrilled by those that create a more collegial atmosphere. "Now even first year students," he says, "can experience the friendships and bonding that come from living in a close community." Alan Hassenfeld agrees, adding, "It all comes down to community, belonging, and diversity…. Entering the Memorial Tower gateway is like walking into a new world - a world I would love to have been part of."

The Fisher Hassenfeld benefactors are long-time, loyal supporters of the University, who have made many contributions of service, as well as funds. Jerome Fisher, a Wharton Overseer and former Penn Trustee, and Anne Fisher, an Overseer of the Graduate School of Fine Arts, made naming gifts to the Fisher Fine Arts Library, the Fisher Program in Management and Technology, and the Anne Fisher Graduate School of Fine Arts Fellowships. Both Fishers served on the College House Advisory Board and are members of the Academy of the University of Pennsylvania. Alan Hassenfeld, also a member of the Academy, is a Penn Trustee and School of Arts and Sciences Overseer, and, as Chair of the College House Advisory Board, propelled the project with his energy, even hosting a reception at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston.

With the successful completion of the Quadrangle Renewal Project, the Quad has never looked more beautiful and Penn undergraduates have never been happier. Penn's visionary benefactors have created a new tradition that will benefit Penn students for generations to come.
