Legacy Admissions

Do you have a child or grandchild applying to college?

Is he or she interested in learning more about Penn? The Alumni Council on Admissions (ACA) is a resource for alumni who have children or grandchildren, "legacies," considering an application to one of Penn's four undergraduate schools. Throughout the college search and application process, the ACA offers advice and guidance to legacies and their families...

Legacy Advising Sessions:

We have open advising sessions throughout the year, and reservations are not required. These are held at the E. Craig Sweeten Alumni House, 3533 Locust Walk.

Monday through Friday 12:15 PM and 3:15 PM
(except University holidays)

Saturdays in the fall 1:15 PM
(beginning after Labor Day, continuing through the third Saturday of November)

We recommend legacies attend an Admissions Information Session and Campus Tour. A schedule is available on the website for the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Legacy Advising Sessions are scheduled at times which will coordinate with Admissions programming.

Additional sessions will be available during Homecoming and Alumni Weekend.

Can't make an Advising Session? No problem! ACA Staff are accessible by phone and email.

Legacy Interviews:

Legacies have the option of scheduling a personal interview on campus with a staff member of the Alumni Council on Admissions. Students may schedule interviews beginning with the second semester of their high school junior year. Interviews continue throughout the summer, fall and winter months.

If a legacy would like to interview with the ACA, we encourage them to complete their interview well in advance of application deadlines. It is best for students to complete this interview before they submit the application, so we may offer advice about preparing the application. The interview is completely optional, but it is a nice way to personalize the campus visit.

To schedule an interview, please call our office at 215-898-6888. For a spring or summer appointment, please call about 4-6 weeks in advance of the preferred date. For a fall appointment, we often require up to 8 weeks advance notice.

Other interview opportunities:

  • The School of Nursing seeks to interview all first-year and transfer applicants on campus. If you are considering an application to the School of Nursing, please call 215-898-4271 to arrange an appointment.
  • The Office of Undergraduate Admissions does not offer individual on-campus interviews. They oversee a group of Penn Alumni volunteers known as the Secondary School Committee (SSC). There are about 7,000 of these volunteers worldwide, and they attempt to contact Penn applicants in their region to offer a personal interview. The SSC is unable to reach every applicant, so the Office of Admissions encourages students to rely upon the application for admission as a forum for presenting the many unique aspects of their candidacy. For more information about the SSC, please visit the Admissions website.

Linking Legacies:

We have a student-run program for legacies in high school who want to learn more about Penn. It enables a legacy to exchange emails with a current Penn student and learn more about the Penn of TODAY. Legacies, learn more and sign up here!
