seismic sixties 10-11 AM
The Seismic Sixties: Rock & Roll In A Time Of Transformation

Logan Hall, Room 17
The years from 1962 to 1966 were a period of intense transition for popular music and culture at large. The early Sixties were really an extension of the Fifties -- rock & roll performers still hoped they could make the transition to singing in supper clubs and acting in movies before their teenage audiences grew up. But with the arrival of the Beatles in the U.S. in 1964, everything changed. Suddenly even adults began to mimic the fashions of youth, and the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, and the great Motown artists made it respectable for grown-ups to love popular music. By the end of 1966, the baby boomers and many of their elders were dropped off on the doorstep of psychedelia and the coming Summer of Love.

Join Dr. Anthony DeCurtis as he brings this tumultuous era alive. Dr. DeCurtis teaches in the Creative Writing Program at Penn, is coeditor of The Rolling Stone Illustrated History of Rock & Roll, and author of In Other Words: Artists Talk About Life and Work, a collection of his in-depth interviews with Sir Paul McCartney, Keith Richards, Paul Simon, and Johnny Cash, among others.
