Who will you see this Alumni Weekend? It's a question that brings many of us back to campus for Penn's annual Spring celebration. And this year, you are likely to experience more surprises than ever.
Alumni Weekend 2006 will offer new opportunities for you to reconnect with many of the people who shaped your Penn experience. We continue to add events of interest to the program, and we have made exciting changes to two of the Weekend's most treasured traditions: the Alumni Day Picnic and Parade of Classes. The Parade route will wind through the heart of campus, bringing the festivities to all Picnic-goers. As you reminisce with friends at the Picnic, you can watch the venerable Old Guard, applaud 25th and 50th reunion attendees, and cheer as your class flag goes by in procession.
This year we will also be celebrating several major milestones in Penn's history, in addition to the 300th anniversary of the birthday of the University's founder, Ben Franklin. Most notable are the 125th anniversaries for the founding of the Wharton School and the graduation of Penn's first African-American alumnus, James Brister. Experience our rich legacy of diversity by attending lectures, panels, and a gala dinner honoring all people of color in the Penn community. Participate in recognizing the oldest collegiate school of business which has become one of the (if not the) foremost business schools in the world. Special anniversaries will also honor Penn's innovative Kelly Writers House and Urban Studies Program.
Of course you will also find the kind of thought-provoking programming you have come to expect of Alumni Weekend. Expand your academic horizons by hearing faculty talk on issues like the future of Iraq, how to help your brain age successfully, and the music culture of the 1960s. And be sure to join in this year's Conversation with Amy Gutmann to get an inside look at where Penn's President sees the University today, and envisions it tomorrow -- guided by the principles of the Penn Compact.
Just as you have challenged yourself during the years since graduation, so has your alma mater. There is no better time than Alumni Weekend to see how far we have come -- as individuals and as a university. Discover the energy and vitality that are hallmarks of Penn and reflect your personal legacy as well.
