125 Years of Womenlook who's coming to the celebration at Penn featured an exciting and varied schedule for the two days preceding Homecoming 2001. Panels dealt with the topic "Educating Women for Leadership: Penn Women of the 21st Century" and included:

Other highlights included: inauguration of the new Women's Walkway and Class of '49 Generational Bridge; a kickoff wine and cheese reception/author signing at the PENN Bookstore; a keynote address by Andrea Mitchell, CW'67, Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent for NBC News; a private performance by The Vagina Monologues author, Eve Ensler; Franklin's Daughters, a book featuring alumnae who have made noteworthy contributions to the University and to society (available at the Penn Bookstore); and a networking celebratory party where Penn women networked, caught up with old friends, and made new ones.

1:00-3:00 PM - Penn Women's Center Reception and Open House, 3643 Locust Walk

3:30 PM - "Women as Authors, Books as Legacies." Kick-off reception at the Penn Bookstore and unveiling of customized poster honoring Penn women who have authored books. Rebecca Pepper Sinkler, CGS'75, HON'91, spoke, and Lorene E. Cary, C'78, G'78, Cathy Crimmins, G'78, Laurie Burrows Grad, CW'66, Rebecca Matthias, CW'75, Lisa Scottoline, C'77, L'81, and Angela Nissel, C'98 served as Honorary Chairs.

5:30-7:30 PM - Reception and dinner with President Judith Rodin, Penn Trustees, and senior administrators. Keynote address by Andrea Mitchell, CW'67, Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent for NBC News. The Honorable Marjorie O. Rendell, CW'69, introduced Ms. Mitchell. Closing remarks were presented by Renee Chenault-Fattah, L'82, Co-Anchor, NBC 10 News.

8:00-10:00 PM - A private theatrical performance of The Vagina Monologues at the Annenberg Center was followed by a short performance by its author, Eve Ensler, who stayed to answer questions. Wendy Evans Joseph, C'77, the first producer of The Vagina Monologues, introduced Ms. Ensler.

Eve Ensler, author of The Vagina Monologues, is an award-winning playwright, poet, activist, and screenwriter. The Vagina Monologues won a 1997 Obie Award and was nominated for the Drama Desk and Helen Hayes awards. The world premiere of The Vagina Monologues was the catalyst for V-Day, a global movement to stop violence against women. The 1999 recipient of the Guggenheim Grant in Playwriting, Ms. Ensler is currently writing a screenplay on women in prison for Glenn Close. Ms. Ensler performed a piece called "My Short Skirt" about how women have the right to wear anything, anywhere, without being hurt or bothered. She describes it as "sexy, fun, outrageous, and very liberating."

7:30-9:00 AM - Coffee and continental breakfast featured the "Recognition of University Firsts." Our speaker was Dr. Mary Frances Berry, HOM '87, Geraldine R. Segal Professor of American Social Thought and Professor of History, University of Pennsylvania and Chairperson, U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. Honorary Chair was Gloria Twine Chisum, GR '60, HON '94.

9:30-11:00 AM - Morning panels featured notable alumnae, focusing on issues of importance to women.

11:30-12:00 PM - Inauguration of new Women's Walkway and Class of '49 Generational Bridge (at 38th Street).

12:30-2:30 PM - Gala luncheon for all guests. Christine Hikawa, CW'73, Trustees' Council of Penn Women, presented The Beacon Award, a distinguished award given to Dr. Judith Rodin, President of the University of Pennsylvania. Loretta Barrett, CW'62, GED'65, President, Loretta Barrett Books, Inc., was the speaker for this event.

3:00-4:30 PM - Afternoon panels.

4:45-6:30 PM - Networking and Social Reception. A wonderful time was had by all as we caught up with old friends and made new Penn connections. Our hosts for this event were Ali Weiss, C'93, President of Weiss PR, Inc. and Caroline Waxler, C'93, freelance journalist. Honorary Chairs were Tory Robinson Burch, C'88, Claudia Cohen, CW'72, and Lolita Jackson, ENG'89.

Evening - The festivities continued with the Alumni Award of Merit dinner, kicking off Homecoming 2001 Weekend. Alumni danced to the Joe Sudler swing band, and were entertained by Penn's own Quaker Notes and the Penny Loafers, two outstanding a capella groups. In addition, as a special treat, the Philadelphia School's middle school a capella group Measure to Measure performed.

Saturday, November 3, 2001: Homecoming 2001

Various Homecoming activities included the Penn women's soccer team taking on Princeton and a new two-mile walk (part of the alumni run) in honor of Penn women. After the Penn vs. Princeton football game, the Penn women's basketball team took to the Palestra to unveil a banner in honor of the program's first ever Ivy Championship, followed by a team scrimmage.
