Class of 1961: Endowed Scholarship

The Class of 1961 Endowed Scholarship was established at our 35th reunion in 1996. As of June 30, 2006, it had a market value of $591,438 and a book value of $485,041, with available income for student recipients of $23,174. Through the generosity of classmates during our recent 45th reunion, $170,000 will be added to the scholarship, bringing the total market value to over $760,000 and raise the available income accordingly for students next year. With the graduation of Melinda Gilbert, our student recipient for the past five years, and the increase in the scholarship value, we now have TWO new student recipients who are pictured here. These new students are:

Abigail Moore is a freshman from Sea Cliff, New York, who is majoring in Electrical Systems Engineering. In her recent letter to the Class of 1961 she wrote in part, "With the Class of 1961 Scholarship, I am able to attend Penn with a little less cloud over my head. My parents can tell how happy I am here, and are eternally grateful for this opportunity you have given me. Without your help, I would not be in this exceptional environment. Thank you so much."

Reid Rothenberg is a freshman from Fort Worth, Texas, who is majoring in Fine Arts. In his recent letter to the Class of 1961 he wrote in part, "First, and most importantly, let me thank you with sincere gratitude for helping me attend this university. With your aid, I am able to pursue the wealth of knowledge made accessible by my teachers and fellow peers. To me and my family, this scholarship signifies the immense opportunity that comes with a high level of education. Thanks for giving me a chance."

Classmates can help continue to increase the value of our '61 scholarship by designating your annual Penn gift to the scholarship. Just write the phrase "Designate to Class of 1961 Scholarship" on your check and pledge card and you will help provide more available income for our deserving student recipients.

It is our goal to have the value of the Class of 1961 Scholarship reach at least $1 million for our 50th Reunion in 2011. The generosity of all our classmates will be appreciated to achieve this wonderful class legacy to Penn.
