Impossible to limit to one-so many wonderful friends

My most embarrassing Penn moment:
Just one?
My favorite Penn Professor:
Professor Gleitman. His was the first class I
attended and by design, it was the last class I attended. He was
interesting, he was passionate and he had a wonderful sense of humor.
You forgot you were sitting in a classroom with +200 other students.
The lesson(s) I learned at Penn was/were:
Tolerance and the willingness to embrace diversity.
Our R.A. (I can't remember his name but I lived in the Butcher-Speakman
basement freshman year) encouraged us to avoid the same people we
were friends with in high school and seek out people who were different.
He was right. No sense in repeating high school in college.

Job information:
Senior Staff Consultant - Verizon. I make sure
that the system that bills all of the long distance companies is

I have learned the value of life long friends
who share common values, goals, and a zest for life! (a.k.a. can
party their asses off!!)
Avocations, hobbies, and/or other Interests
to share: Raising our family. Restoring
old things from houses to furniture. Serving 11 years on a 501c3
board to award college scholarships to the relentless. Running and
boxing.
Current Penn connection if any:
Penn Recreational Boxing Club- until last week,
we met at Hutch!
The thing I miss the most about Penn or college
is:
-The sights, sounds and energy of campus on a
warm sunny day.......
-The political discussions at the DuBois house.
-The cool people!
What I miss the least is:
Registration lines (we needed the internet!!)
and tuition (even though compared to today's cost, it was a deal)
My favorite Penn memory:
Having my family come to graduation
My most embarrassing Penn moment:
My most embarrassing moment was after Penn Relays,
freshman year while stepping with the brothers of Groove Phi Groove
in super block (front of HRE), when I was pelted with an egg on
the top of my head! I didn't miss a step (my adrenalin was racing)
but felt bad that the brothers from other schools got to see this
kind of callous act.
My favorite Penn Professor:
Judge Leon Higginbotham (deceased), Sociology
class- Race and the Law and author: In the Matter of Color. He had
a way of making us feel like we lived history (i.e., the Dred Scott
decision- Supreme Court Chief Justice Taney- "The black man
has no rights that a white man is bound to respect") and his
life experiences! And he gave me the understanding that the quality
of life for us was defined by the letter of the law. Henry Gleitman
taught Psch 1- I remember his animated and entertaining presentation
on the sex life of the praying mantis to this day! Ralph Smith-
His guidance inside and outside the classroom was special. As a
student, he, too was a boxer!
Lesson(s) Learned at Penn:
Penn is a microcosm of life as we know it, for
the good and the bad. I did not think of it as such then, but it
was during my senior year , that I was introduced to terrorism.
The bomb threats at Dubois House, being evacuated from the dorm
at 2 a.m. during mid terms, and when I received an escort from a
campus cop who appeared at the university museum (how they knew
where to find me is still a mystery?) because the DuBois staff was
threatened (I was an RA), pale in comparison to all of the good
times and relationships that I forged at Penn. Its true, that you
meet friends for life during the college years.

I decided that the commute along the Schuylkill had gotten overwhelming
and I found the position at MMWR. In the meantime, I had 3 children

am invoived in a local women's group and the school PTA, and manage
to attend most home Penn football and basketball games.

Spangled Banner after it had been announced that the US had beaten
Russia in ice hockey in the Olympics.

The thing I miss the most about Penn or college
is:
The freedom of living life as an undergraduate.
Spring Fling. Being a sophomore woman in the Quad. An extended
wardrobe consisting of everyone else's clothes. Philosphical quandaries,
which seemed like terrible things then. The really inspiring teachers
like Alan Mann, and Paul Korshin. and of course Kelly and Cohens.
Drinks at the bar at La Terasse. All the good old friends.
What I miss the least is:
A main campus all torn up and piles of dirt
everywhere upon arrival. Superblock. Tragic Markup (aka Magic
Market). Working as a waitress at La Terasse. Rosengarten Reserve.
(I see Van Pelt is now much more hospitable)

Year/Degrees from College:
BA in Elementary Education '82, Masters in Computer
Education from Nova University in Ft. Lauderdale, FL '89
Where do you live now?
Philadelphia, PA (why? I don't know)
Marriage and children info:
Single, but I'm godmother to 4 children...does
that count?
Job information:
I'm a freelance educator (fancy name for a math
tutor), a high school varsity boy's tennis coach, I represent a
comedy group of Mask & Wig grads called "Mixed Nuts" that specialize
in medical humor... want to hire them? and a personal investment
advisor... the old jack-of-all-trades kind of wacko.
Since Penn?
I taught middle school math and computers and
coached tennis for 10 years, took a year off to train dolphins in
Hawaii and to do some other creative endeavors, and haven't gone
back to a 9-5 job since. When not working in my various capacities
Iisted above, I serve on about 10 local and national boards (4 at
Penn alone) and was made reunion queen for life of my high school...
go figure! CLEARLY too much free time on my hands or too good a
multi-tasker.
Avocations, hobbies, and/or other Interests
to share:
Travelling, reunions, decorating, and generating
creative ideas and creating miracles!
Current Penn connection if any:
Alumni Interviewer and Chairperson outside of
Philly, President and Student Liason-Friars Senior Society Graduate
Board, Board member-University of Pennsylvania Alumni Society (UPAS),
President-Bloomers Graduate Association, Board member-Univ. of Pennsylvania
Hillel, Past volunteer-ICA and Class Reunion Chair of course!
The thing I miss the most about Penn or college
is:
Having my best friends living a dorm away, being
an R.A., yearly performing on stage and competing on the balance
beam (crazy huh!).
What I miss the least is:
Multi-choice exams, and my bout with walking mono.
My favorite Penn Professor was:
A actually my teaching mentor doing my senior
teaching internship that no one woud know.....Vicky Nees. She taught
me more than anyone and served as the ideal teaching role model
that I still strive to emulate. Least favorite... Professor Vila
in astronomy b-o-r-i-n-g.
My most embarrassing Penn moment:
I don't get easily embarrassed, but having all
my underwear hanging from a tree outside my dorm room window as
an April Fool's prank comes close... good thing they were clean.
My favorite Penn memory:
So many... among which were: getting to play and
dance on-stage every year as the first 4-year Bloomer; illegally
scaling the walls of the quad to get on the roof of Provost Towers
with my fellow gymnasts; and living in Phi Kappa Alpha and Sigma
Nu during the summer and seeing how the other half lives (so-to-speak).
Thank g-d I was born a woman!
The lesson(s) I learned at Penn were:
1) What you learned in most college classes has
absolutely no bearing on whatever you end up doing in life. And
the information is rarely used...even in Quizzo. 2) That it's physically
possible to stay up for three days without sleep but not recommended.
3) Youth and innocence are so rarely appreciated at the time, and
so easily lost.
