Caroline Waxler, C'93
I
just came out with a book in February called Stocking
Up on Sin: How to Crush the Market with Vice-Based Investing,
published by Wiley. The book is about how you - and
others - can find ways to profit from your and others'
bad habits. I wrote it based in large part on a lot
of the investing lessons I learned as a columnist for
Forbes, where I was lucky enough to interview some of
the smartest portfolio managers around.
A key part of what makes this book a good resource,
however, is the sample portfolio of sin stocks that
was put together by fellow classmate and Penn alumnus
Carter Crum, C'93, now a very successful money manager
with Smith Barney in Menlo Park, California. He picked
a great group of stocks that have thoroughly trounced
the S&P. Who knew vice could be so profitable? I'm biased,
but I think it's also an entertaining book - it's likely
the only investing book you'll ever read which uses
references to the movie Old School
to illustrate a point. Please read it and let me know
what you think - cwaxler@earthlink.net.
Currently, I'm hard at work finishing my next book. It's about the former deputy director of the FBI, Weldon Kennedy, who headed the government's investigation into the Oklahoma City bombing.
In addition to the books, I'm a writer for VH1's new weekly news show, "Best Week Ever," a look back on the pop culture events of the past seven days. I also maintain my Penn connection by serving on the Board of the Penn Club of New York.
