Happy 2004!
I hope this newsletter finds you well. Below, you'll find an update
on fellow classmates, school news, campus developments and upcoming
events.
On June 20, 2003, Judith Rodin, president of the University of Pennsylvania
since 1994, announced that she intends to step down from the office
when she completes her 10-year term in June 2004. For more information,
check out www.upenn.edu/pennnews/rodin_legacy/.
Update: Penn
names presidential nominee.
In other administrative changes, President Rodin announced, "General
Clifford Stanley has resigned from his position as executive vice
president of the University, effective October 10, 2003. Between now
and June 30, 2004, the end of my term as president, the vice presidents
who reported to General Stanley will again report directly to me,
as they did before General Stanley's arrival. We have much to accomplish
during this period, and I believe that this structure will serve us
well." The search for a new executive vice president will continue
after a new president has been named.
As for campus development, the Melvin J. and Claire Levine Hall was
dedicated at a ceremony and luncheon on April 9, 2003. The building,
which conveniently links the Towne and Moore buildings, is now home
to the Department of Computer and Information Science. The principal
architect for the project was James Timberlake of KieranTimberlake
Associates LLP.
Formerly called Hill Field, the field between 33rd and 34th streets
and Walnut and Chestnut streets has been transformed into Hill Square.
On November 7, 2003, during Homecoming, a dedication of the Women's
Sculpture Project took place. Honoring 125 Years of Women at Penn,
the project, funded by generous alumni donations, brings a beautiful
new walkway, granite benches, and striking landscaping and lighting
to this vital campus gateway.
A six-year project to install sprinklers, upgrade elevators, and make
structural repairs on the three undergraduate high rise residences
at Hamilton Village (a.k.a. Superblock) started in the summer of 2002
and is well underway. Progress is already visible on campus.
The new Hillel Center, Steinhardt Hall, was dedicated on Thursday,
October 23, 2003. The building has comfortable lounges and meeting
rooms, Internet access, a Judaic library, a TV room, and a Beit Midrash
(Hebrew language study center). The university-run, kosher dining
program is on the first floor. Learn more at: dolphin.upenn.edu/~hillel/
As you can tell, a lot of construction has been occurring at Penn
(some things never change!). Check out the Campus Development Plan
online at: www.facilities.upenn.edu/whatsNew/campusdev.php3
Winter sports are under way. Men's basketball started their season
in late November and will run through March. One game to note is on
Tuesday, March 9, when Penn plays Princeton. To purchase tickets for
games, call the Penn Athletic Ticket Office at (215) 898-6151. You
can check sports schedules www.pennathletics.com
or call PennPhone (scores and highlights) at (215) 898-4519.
Also, mark your calendars for Alumni
Weekend, May 14-16, 2004; Commencement will be on Monday, May
17. This year's weekend will be filled with a wide and exciting array
of events and programs, so stay tuned for further details as Alumni
Weekend nears. For travel arrangements to Philadelphia, call Fran
Abrahamer Rosenstock, CW'62, GED'64, at Monarch Travel, (800) 458-7177.
Last, but certainly not least, please send in profiles about yourself
or a fellow classmate to Justin Feil (jfeil@comcast.net)
for the next newsletter. You can also submit news notes to our Class
Notes section in the Alumni Online Community.
Thanks!
