02/28/05 Did You Know...that Penn's Men's Basketball team became the first team to secure a spot in this year's NCAA tournament? Penn's 80-72 victory over Columbia this past Saturday not only earned them their 21st trip to the NCAA Tournament, but also the Ivy League title. Hurrah for Pennsylvania!

02/21/05 Did You Know...that a $10 million gift from an anonymous donor will create four endowed University professorships? The gift is the first significant one to Penn Integrates Knowledge, a University-wide initiative to recruit faculty members to Penn whose research and teaching exemplify the integration of knowledge across disciplines.

02/04/05 Did you know... that a photo in the Penn Library's Marian Anderson Collection is the inspiration for a United States Black Heritage commemorative stamp? The stamp, depicting opera singer and Philadelphia native Anderson wearing a burgundy colored dress, is based on a black-and-white 1934 Mois Benko photograph housed at the University of Pennsylvania Annenberg Rare Book and Manuscript Library.

Penn alumnus and former University Vice President Pedro Ramos has been appointed managing director for the City of Philadelphia, the second most important post in the city according to the city charter. Ramos will be the highest ranking Latino official in the history of Philadelphia government. [more]

Nursing School alumna Jennifer Hall heals the hearts of Iraqi children and their families -- both literally and figuratively. Hall has been working in Amman, Jordan since October for the philanthropic organization Brothers Together. [more]

At a recent Emory University panel discussion , a few notable academics got together to discuss hip-hop’s impact for their fifth annual State of Race forum. Michael Eric Dyson, a humanities professor at the University of Pennsylvania, said hip-hop has become a kind of scapegoat. "Music should not be burdened with what you and I should be doing as members of society," Dyson said.The event focused on issues ranging from education to poverty--issues the panelists stressed existed long before hip-hop.
