Did You Know... that cardiac surgeons at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) made Gary Onufer the first person in the Northeastern United States to receive a temporary Total Artificial Heart? The cutting-edge "Bridge to Transplant" technology will keep Gary alive until he finally gets a heart transplant. HUP became only the eighth hospital in the country and the 15th worldwide to perform the six-hour surgery, which resulted in the complete removal of Onufer's heart and the insertion of a new, completely artificial heart.

Did You Know… that a $3 million gift from Roy, C'61, and Gretchen, CW'59, Jackson, owners of Barbaro, will endow a Chair for Equine Disease Research in the name of Dean W. Richardson, Barbaro's surgeon, at the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania? "This endowed chair," said Joan C. Hendricks, dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine, "is a strong recognition of the power of translating fundamental scientific advances into new real-world treatments. With a new faculty position dedicated to the study of equine disease, we will be better positioned to fight deadly conditions like laminitis."

Did You Know... that Penn’s Online Community for alumni has a new name -- QuakerNet -- and a new website address?

This new link is easier for alumni to read and remember. The Online Directory, accessible only to registered alumni, provides a great resource: alumni can view their directory listing or use the update feature to send address, business or academic changes to Penn. Alumni can post photos to their profiles and set up a permanent email forwarding address (@alumni.upenn.edu). This is a service provided to Penn alumni so they never have to change their email address, even when changing jobs or getting a new email provider.
