Did You Know ... that writers Richard Ford, Cynthia Ozick and Ian Frazier will be visiting Penn in Spring 2006 as part of the Kelly Writers House Fellows Program? Since 1998, the Kelly Writers House Fellows program has been offering students the opportunity to be in "close contact with the writers in an informal setting." Kelly Writers House Faculty Director Al Filreis says he looks for authors who are accessible to young writers.

Did You Know . . . that three researchers from Penn have been named among 58 of the nation's most promising young scientists and engineers by President Bush? Marija Drndic, assistant professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, Tejvir Khurana, assistant professor in the Department of Physiology, and Kevin G. Volpp, assistant professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine all received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) and were honored at a ceremony June 13 at the White House.

Did You Know. . . that the winner of the reality show, "Beauty and the Geek", is Penn medical student, Chuck Munyon? Chuck, M'06, who is concentrating in neuroscience, was one of the contestants on the reality show that "featured seven smart but socially awkward men and seven beautiful, less intelligent women competing in teams of two for a grand prize. Challenges for each team centered around the perceived strengths of the opposite sex."

Did You Know… that as of Friday, July 1, the School of Social Work will officially assume its new name – the School of Social Policy & Practice? As Dean Richard Gelles said, the School is “the newest and also one of the oldest schools devoted to the education of social workers and agents of social change…Our name change more accurately identifies the school’s commitment to its deeply-held and broad-based efforts to advance human welfare, promote resiliency among disadvantaged populations and provide a model for other schools, centers and programs that share our core values and goals."

A pair of Penn students took home top honors--and the $20,000 that accompanied it--in this year's Wharton Business Plan Competition Venture Finals. Team FibrinX Inc. landed the grand prize for its innovative use of Atlantic salmon blood-plasma to seal off serious wounds and prevent excessive bleeding. Engineering Ph.D. candidate Dhaval Gosalia and second-year MBA student Jonathan Goodspeed created a sealant that is less expensive than other mammal-based ones, and also less susceptible to viruses. Staying simple helped win Samuel Reeves, W'05, and his business partner, Josh Koplin, the $5,000 grand prize in the first annual Weiss Tech House PennVention competition. Their entry, HRI Minesweeper, is a lower-cost landmine-clearing machine. [more]

How do solids melt? Physicists in the U.S. have gained new insights into one most of the basic phenomena in physics -- the melting of a solid. Arjun Yodh and colleagues at the University of Pennsylvania and Swarthmore College have shown that melting begins at defects before spreading to the entire crystal. [more]

The past and present of Penn's track team collided last weekend when Penn alum and 2003 NCAA 800-meter champion Sam Burley and Junior Courtney Jaworski both competed at the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships in Los Angeles. [more]
