June 26 , 2009 Did You Know... that world-renowned genetics researcher Shelley L. Berger has been named the 10th Penn Integrates Knowledge Professor? Berger is a leader in the rapidly evolving field of epigenetics, the study of genetic changes caused by factors other than genes. Her research focuses on the role of chromatin (the combination of DNA and proteins found in chromosomes) in regulating genes, especially in cancer and viral infections. She will be the Daniel S. Och University professor with an appointment shared between the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology in the School of Medicine and the Department of Biology in the School of Arts and Sciences. Did You Know... that Penn Medicine's film Facing the Facts won a regional Emmy® in May? This hard-hitting documentary delivers a powerful wake-up call: America's ever-growing Alzheimer's population threatens to overwhelm both the health care system's ability to care for these patients and the country's ability to pay. Penn's School of Medicine professors, Dr. Trojanowski and his colleague, Dr. Virginia M.-Y. Lee, lead one of the world's most respected research teams in Alzheimer's Disease. Trojanowski and Lee teamed up with HBO, Penn's Dr. Gerard D. Schellenberg (a world-class Alzheimer's disease geneticist), as well as nearly twenty other authorities from across the country. The team's two-year collaboration resulted in Momentum in Science, part three of HBO's four-part series, The Alzheimer's Project.

Did You Know... that Karen Glanz, a globally influential public-health scholar, has been named the ninth Penn Integrates Knowledge University Professor? Glanz specializes in the impact of behavior on health, especially the modification of risks for cancer and obesity. Her appointment will be shared between the School of Medicine and the School of Nursing, and she will lead a new center focused on research and training in health behaviors.

Did You Know... that, following a five-and-a-half-month international search, Vincent Price, a leading global expert on public opinion, social influence and political communication, has been named the 29th provost of the University of Pennsylvania? Price, who has served as interim provost since March 1, is the Steven H. Chaffee Term Professor of Communication in Penn's Annenberg School for Communication, with a secondary appointment as professor of political science in the School of Arts and Sciences.
"Vince is an eminent scholar, a seasoned academic administrator and an exceptionally judicious and effective academic leader," Gutmann said. "He has a passion for academic excellence, access and diversity, interdisciplinary scholarship and teaching, effective collaboration, deliberative problem solving and inclusive team building. He will be a superb partner with Penn's deans, faculty, staff, students and me in leading the University in the years ahead and advancing the Penn Compact."
Price will formally assume his office on July 1 after ratification by the University's trustees at their June meeting.

Did You Know... that Jon Huntsman, Jr., C'87, current Republican Governor of Utah was nominated by President Obama to serve as United States Ambassador to China? Huntsman has held several foreign policy posts throughout his career, including serving as US Ambassador to the Republic of Singapore; and has worked as a White House staff assistant to President Ronald Reagan. In addition to holding several business leadership positions in the Huntsman Company, he is fluent in Mandarin Chinese. Huntsman recently addressed Penn alumni on April 23, 2009, during the launching of the Penn Club of Utah.
