September 28 , 2009 Did You Know… that Penn President Amy Gutmann has been honored with the 2009 Carnegie Corporation Academic Leadership Award? The Carnegie Corporation Academic Leadership Award recognizes leaders in higher-education who have shown extraordinary commitment to education, research, civic engagement and global outreach. The honor comes with individual grants of $500,000, to be used at the President’s discretion to further academic priorities. "I am truly honored to be among the ranks of the distinguished current and past recipients of this award," Gutmann said on receiving the honor, "and I am especially proud to accept it on behalf of the eminent faculty, students and staff of Penn. It is particularly meaningful to me that the award honors the legacy of Andrew Carnegie, a great Pennsylvanian, and a tireless advocate of the public's right to knowledge. This Academic Leadership Award inspires all of us at Penn to continue pursuing our vision of providing world-class teaching, research and service with the goal of bettering the world."

Did You Know... Penn President Amy Gutmann recently unveiled the University's groundbreaking Climate Action Plan? The Climate Action Plan lays out detailed steps the University will take over the next few years to serve as an institutional role model in the daily application of green practices. This plan focuses on five areas of action: education, energy conservation, waste reduction, emissions control and green design.
To develop Penn's plan, a special Environmental Sustainability Advisory Committee made up of more than 40 students, faculty and staff, worked for two years assessing Penn’s carbon footprint and developing long-range sustainability goals. Through enacting this plan, Gutmann said, Penn is "putting our knowledge to work and leading the sustainability revolution that will help preserve and transform the world for generations to come."

Did You Know... that former Penn basketball star Jerome Allen, W'95, is returning to Penn as an Assistant Men's Basketball Coach? As a player, Allen was named Ivy League Player of the Year twice and was inducted into the Big 5 Hall of Fame in February. He has been playing basketball professionally in Europe, retiring at the end of the 2008 - 2009 year.
Glenn Miller, Penn's John R. Rockwell Head Coach of Men's Basketball said, "I am thrilled that Jerome has accepted my offer to join our coaching staff. I consider his hiring a home run for our basketball program. Jerome is person of very high character and a proven winner. The very same attributes that enabled him to enjoy a highly successful playing career will allow him to have a positive influence on our players' development on and off the court."

Did You Know... that the University of Pennsylvania has launched the Penn Center for Neuroscience and Society? A cross-disciplinary endeavor to increase understanding of the impact of neuroscience on society through research and teaching, the Center will confront the social, legal and ethical implications of increasingly rapid advances in neuroscience. The director of the Center will be Penn cognitive neuroscientist Martha J. Farah who is currently the Walter H. Annenberg Professor of Natural Sciences in the Department of Psychology at Penn and also the director of Penn’s Center for Cognitive Neuroscience.
"For more than a half-century, Penn has been driving the brain sciences revolution, whose impact can be felt in every sphere of human endeavor, from enhancing human performance to treating anti-social behavior to understanding neurodegenerative diseases," Gutmann said. "The new Penn Center for Neuroscience and Society typifies our resolve to integrate and to apply knowledge for humanity's benefit."
