Grants

Fund to Encourage Women (FEW) Grant
The FEW Grant was established to bring to campus internationally renowned female scholars to lecture and meet with faculty and students. The FEW recipients not only lecture but also serve as role models for female students during the day or two that they are on campus. FEW Grants went to the Physics, Chemistry, and Math departments several years in a row. The FEW Grants have been extremely successful in achieving their ultimate goal of increasing the number of female faculty members at Penn, particularly in departments where they are underrepresented. Each year, a Request for Proposal is mailed to departments by the School of Arts and Sciences. Proposals are typically due in April and awards are announced in early summer. Interested parties can contact Cara Palladino in the SAS Office of External Affairs at (215) 898-5262 or pcara@sas.upenn.edu.

Summer Research Stipends
The Trustees' Council of Penn Women offers Summer Research Stipends to female faculty or faculty members whose research is centrally concerned with the role of women in society, science, or arts and letters. These awards are given to assist in the promotion of standing faculty to the permanent rank of Associate Professor. A public request for applications is made in the spring each year. Research proposals will be reviewed and awarded through a peer review process. Interested parties can contact the Alice Paul Center for Research on Women and Gender at 215-898-8740.

Emergency Grant
The Trustees' Council of Penn Women will offer grants to students who have special financial needs. Special consideration will be given to women students. Grants will be for sudden, compelling, and unanticipated need due to changed financial circumstances. Examples include the death or unemployment of a parent or illness. These students would be unable to continue their studies without special financial assistance. Students should demonstrate resourcefulness and self-reliance in their quest for a Penn education, and their qualities should identify them as role models for other University students. This type of grant can be requested at any time of the year. Interested parties can email Terri Welsh, Office of Alumni Relations, or call 215-898-3463.

TCPW Grant
The TCPW Grant is available to individuals who or organization that promote women's issues, the quality of undergraduate and graduate life for women, the institutional advancement of women, or the physical, emotional and psychological well-being of women. The TCPW Grant Committee is inclined to give favorable consideration to projects that affect a broad segment of the University population, move the University community to a higher awareness of women's issues, or provide seed money for pilot programs that show potential for becoming ongoing self-supporting programs.

Applications are due mid-February each year and award notification takes place in May for funding during the next academic year. Funds are distributed in July/August each year.
