Support ALA

Emergency Fund
The Association of Latino Alumni  launched the Emergency Fund in 2009 to offer emergency grants to students facing an immediate financial crisis, with a preference for Latino undergraduates. Applicants must face an immediate crisis that is impeding their studies and progress towards timely receipt of a degree. Students must be enrolled in the University and be in good academic standing to qualify. The ALA emergency Fund Committee will determine the grants with input from Student Financial Services. The fund has distributed 10 grants thus far totaling $8,800.60.

Students facing an immediate financial crisis are encouraged to apply for funding here: www.alumni.upenn.edu/ALAEmergencyFund. Your PennKey will be required, please select the first option, "I have a PennKey" to log in.

Below is a letter from an ALA Emergency Fund recipient:

Dear ALA Board,
I want to thank you all for giving me the opportunity to replace my laptop. By awarding me this grant, you have allowed me to obtain a tool that is essential for school. All of your generosity truly has inspired me to help others and to continue giving back to my community. It really means a lot, especially as a new student to Penn’s campus, to have such a well-grounded and supportive community. ALA’s kindness truly makes me embrace Penn as my new home. I also mentioned ALA’s gift to my mom. She cried in happiness over the phone and would like me to thank you for all on her behalf for everything. She says that it means a lot to have people who are looking after students like me and helping me out in my greatest time of need. I also want to especially thank Mr. Smith and Johnny who have personally walked me through this process.  Thanks again for the tremendous amount of support. I promise you all I will continue working hard and eventually give back to others, both as a physician and as a future member of ALA.
Best,
Emmanuel Córdova C'15

Endowed Scholarship
The Association of Latino Alumni Endowed Scholarship was established in 2001 to provide financial support to an academically gifted Latino undergraduate who would otherwise be unable to meet the cost of a Penn education.

When ALA began its effort to raise funds for this scholarship, we knew we had embarked on an important project, but we had no idea how far-reaching our effort would become. We were amazed by the enthusiasm and generosity of Penn's Latino community. Having exceeded our initial goal of $100,000 within two years, we quickly set our sights even higher -- $200,000, enough to support two scholarships for sophomores - 1 female and 1 male. We are now setting our goal to $400,000 so that we can increase the amount of the awards for the two recipients each year. We need your help
