Double Bear Rocks Shenandoah National Park
Join us for an 8½ mile hike into one of the most diverse scenic areas of central Shenandoah National Park. From the trailhead parking area on Rte. 211 (just over 4 miles west of Sperryville, VA), we will ascend the Pass Mountain trail for a forest walk along the ridge. We will pass the Pass Mountain shelter and soon after turn north on the Appalachian Trail. After reaching the summit of the mountain, we will descend ½ mile to the Double Rocks overlook with expansive views west of the Luray Valley, New Market Gap, and the Massanutten Range, with Strickler Knob and Kennedy Peak visible on a clear day. We will then descend back to the trailhead.
This trip will cover approximately 1750 vertical feet and take about 5 hours, including lunch, breaks, and stops to admire the views. This is considered a moderate mountain hike. We will meet at 10AM sharp at the trailhead on Rte. 211.
Clouds and sprinkles will not deter us. In case of heavy rain, we will postpone. If time allows, after the hike, those interested will stop in at a vineyard and/or local inn for dinner.
