The Alumni Award Merit Gala honors outstanding alumni achievement and dedication to the University and Penn community. Selected by the Awards and Resolutions Committee of the Penn Alumni Board of Directors, Michael Barrett, ENG'89, President of the Board, will present these honors during the Homecoming Weekend activities. The Alumni Award of Merit Gala presents the Alumni Award of Merit, the Young Alumni Award, and the Creative Spirit Award to a group of individuals who exemplify what it means to be a truly dedicated Penn alumnus. In addition, the Social Impact Award, selected by the Alumni Circle under the Office of Social Equity & Community, honors Penn alumni who, through their dedicated time and talent, have demonstrated an ongoing commitment to improving the lives of others in ways that meaningfully address issues of social inequity.

The evening also includes a presentation of the Alumni Club Award of Merit, chosen by the Regional Clubs Advisory Board, and the Class Award of Merit, and David N. Tyre Award for Excellence in Class Communications, both selected by the Alumni Class Leadership Council, highlighting the outstanding work alumni volunteers perform regionally and on behalf the alumni classes.

Held during Friday evening of Homecoming at Annenberg Center, the event is open to all alumni to come and celebrate their fellow classmates, family, and friends. The evening includes entertainment from Penn’s outstanding student groups, along with President Liz Magill paying tribute to alumni honorees and their outstanding achievements.

What's the Alumni Award of Merit Gala?

The Alumni Award of Merit Gala is an annual event that highlights and honors outstanding efforts by alumni volunteers across the globe. Held on Friday evening of Homecoming Weekend, the event is open to all alumni, who are invited to celebrate their fellow classmates and friends. The evening includes entertainment from Penn’s outstanding student groups, along with President Liz Magill paying tribute to the alumni honorees and their outstanding achievements.

Who's invited?

You are!! Of course, the award recipients attend, along with family, friends and classmates, and leaders from the alumni community and the University are always on-hand to celebrate. And it wouldn't be an Award of Merit Gala without you. Tickets are available as a part of Homecoming registration and include open bar, cocktail and dinner reception, and lavish dessert. You won't leave hungry!

How are these awards decided?

The recipients of the Alumni Award of Merit, the Young Alumni Award are selected by the Awards and Resolutions Committee of the Penn Alumni Board of Directors. The recipients are individuals who exemplify what it means to be a truly "involved" Penn alumnus. Selected by the Creative Spirit Award Committee, the Creative Spirit Award is also presented during the Gala and is awarded to an alumnus who has illustrated a lifelong commitment to the arts through philanthropic or volunteer support and/or outstanding personal achievements.

The recipient of the Club Awards of Merit are chosen by the Regional Clubs Advisory Board, and the recipients of the Class Award of Merit and David N. Tyre Award for Excellence in Class Communications are selected by the Alumni Class Leadership Council. These club and class awards highlight the outstanding work alumni volunteers perform regionally and on behalf the alumni classes.
