Faculty Host

André Dombrowski

André Dombrowski is Frances Shapiro-Weitzenhoffer Associate Professor of 19th-Century European Art, having joined the faculty at Penn in 2008. His research centers on the arts and material cultures of Europe and its empires in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, including Impressionism and Modernism. He lectures regularly on the Russian avant-garde as well as art and architecture in St. Petersburg, and has written on such crucial artists as Cézanne, Manet, Monet, and Degas. His special emphasis concerns the social and intellectual rationales behind the emergence of modernist painting. Professor Dombrowski received his Ph.D. from UC Berkeley in 2006, and holds an M.A. from the University of Hamburg and another from London’s Courtauld Institute of Art. He was awarded a J. Paul Getty Postdoctoral Fellowship in 2008-09, membership in the School of Historical Studies, Institute for Advanced Study, at Princeton in 2012-13, and the 2020-21 Paul Mellon Senior Fellowship at the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC.
