Association of Alumnae ARCHIVE

Overview

The Association of Alumnae, organized in 1912, is one of the constituent organizations of Penn Alumni. Every woman becomes a member of the Association upon receiving a degree from the University. The purpose of the Association of Alumnae is to strengthen the relationship between the University of Pennsylvania and its alumnae and to promote the interests and welfare of the University in areas of concern to women. The Association welcomes all Penn alumnae to become involved in its many endeavors on behalf of the University. An active and diverse group of officers, an eighteen-member Board of Directors, and various school and club representatives meet regularly to plan special events, to serve as a forum for the discussion of alumni policies and activities, and to support the University in many different areas.

Ongoing activities of the Association include:

  • The sponsorship of annual book awards to outstanding high school students throughout the country. These book awards may also be sponsored by regional alumni clubs and individuals.

  • The presentation of an award each year to the outstanding woman student in Penn’s Continuing Education program as well as an award known as the Fathers’ Trophy to the outstanding senior woman scholar/athlete.

  • The Association of Alumnae Rosemary D. Mazzatenta Scholars Award, an annual award of up to $3000 to female members of the sophomore and junior class in the School of Arts and Sciences to pursue an internship or research project relevant to their academic interests.

  • The Association of Alumnae Robert J. Alig Award recognizes a senior woman member of Penn Traditions who has demonstrated a commitment to serving Alumni Relations and is committed to strengthening the relationship between the University of Pennsylvania and its alumnae.

  • A Welcome Freshmen AofA t-shirt giveaway in conjunction with New Student Orientation.

  • An annual Colloquium event which supports our theme of Women Shaping a Better Tomorrow.

  • Rosemary D. Mazzatenta Scholars return each January to discuss their summer projects at a program shared by representatives from the Center for Undergraduate Research and Fellowships -CURF. This is an informative evening to which all sophomore and junior undergraduate women are invited.

  • Fundraising projects that support the Scholars program, as well as other Association of Alumnae activities.

The Association of Alumnae has done much to promote the tradition of women serving Penn and looks forward to meeting the needs of Penn women in the twenty-first century.

Association Allies
The Penn Association of Alumnae welcomes the support of male allies who seek to further the Association’s mission. The Association recognizes that efforts to promote gender equality are stronger when both women and men participate in the conversation. Therefore, all male alumni of the University of Pennsylvania who wish to join in the Association’s efforts to promote and support the women of the University of Pennsylvania are invited to do so as Association Allies.

Through its many activities, the Association of Alumnae works to promote the interests and welfare of the University in areas of concern to women. All Penn women graduates are members of the Association of Alumnae and are welcome to join the Association.  Questions? Email Alumni Relations or call 215-898-7811.
