"Towards Inclusion: Diversity at Penn"
The James Brister Society produced the film, "Towards Inclusion: Diversity at Penn", in conjunction with the 125th anniversary of James Brister's graduation. The film is a 26 minute historical documentary which presents the story of diversity at Penn by highlighting the experiences of the first African-American, Asian, Latino and Native American students at Penn. The film explores the importance of diversity at the University: past, present and future. Through personal stories of alumni and the experience of administrators, the documentary examines how a leading University integrated racial and ethnic diversity into its fabric. About JBS Named after the
first person of color to graduate from the University
of Pennsylvania in 1881, the James Brister Society
is comprised of alumni leaders who seek to improve
the quality of the campus experience for students,
faculty and administrators of color.
Since the U.S. Supreme Court upheld affirmative action as a way to promote diversity in higher education, many colleges and universities across the country have rededicated themselves to this cause. The James Brister Society, established originally as the Committee for Minority Permanence, has worked to promote diversity since 1993.
