Paul Schmidt


 Paul Schmidt is Professor and Associate Chair in the Department of Biology; he also serves as the NCAA Faculty Athletics Representative for Penn, Chair of the Athletic Advisory Committee, and is the Faculty Representative on the Ivy League Policy Committee. Paul received his BA in Biology from Holy Cross (1993), where he was a two-year captain in men’s soccer, Patriot League Scholar Athlete of the Year, two-time All-Conference nominee, and recipient of the Crompton Gold Medal. He received his PhD in Biology & Medicine at Brown University (1999) and is broadly interested in evolution, genetics, and ecology. His research integrates field work in North America, Africa, and South America with theory, experimentation, and genomic analysis; this work is funded by the National Science Foundation, the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, and the University of Pennsylvania Research Foundation. Paul teaches Evolutionary Biology (BIOL230) as well as Writing for Biologists (BIOL607), and is a previous recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award in Biology
