The Rise of the Pavilion at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania

Introduction by: Kevin B. Mahoney
Moderated by: Lynn M. Schuchter, MD
The Pavilion at the University of Pennsylvania is more than a new hospital. It is the connective tissue of Penn’s medical campus — and the culmination of two decades of change at Penn Medicine. Integrating HUP’s inpatient care with advanced outpatient treatments at the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine, this revolutionary new space is Penn’s largest construction project in history, keeping us ready to battle any pandemic while elevating the privacy and dignity of patients and providing innovative, compassionate care. Come hear firsthand from our leaders and doctors just how the Pavilion will impact the lives of hundreds of thousands of patients in Philadelphia, the region, and beyond.

Arts at Homecoming Annual Launch Party at Kelly Writers House: The Scholar Artists

Among the members of Penn’s faculty are scholars who are also practicing artists. Or, as they will argue at this exciting session: artists who understand their scholarly, critical and theoretical activity to converge with the art they make. Learn the stories of people who have thrived with this special convergence. Al Filreis will moderate a panel of such scholar-artists: Herman Beavers, Sharon Hayes, Firoozeh Kashani-Sabet, Ken Lum, and Simone White.

Virtual Gallery Hop

The annual Hop will be virtual this year but we will still look at great art from four of Penn's art galleries! We will start with the Arthur Ross Gallery and see images from "Re-materialize" which will highlight four contemporary artists who work with recycled or repurposed materials: El Anatsui, Shari Mendelson, Jackie Milad, and Alison Saar, then move to the Architectural Archives for a behind the scenes look at Shofuso and Modernism: The Architecture and Design of George Nakashima, Antonin and Noemi Raymond, and Junzo Yoshimura, then move to the Libraries where we will hear about the works of Ashley Bryan, a renowned artist, writer, storyteller, children's book creator, and humanitarian and the creator of thousands of drawings, paintings, collages, and linoleum block prints over the course of his long and productive life. and finally end at the Institute of Contemporary Art where we will hear about Milford Graves: A Mind-Body Deal, a solo exhibition of the interdisciplinary work of this visionary jazz musician.

Featuring: Arthur Ross Gallery: Heather Moqtaderi, Assistant Director and Curator; Architectural Archives: William Whitaker, Curator and Collections Manager; Libraries: Lynne Farrington, Senior Curator, Special Collections; ICA: Anthony Elms, Daniel and Brett Sundheim Chief Curator. Moderated by Sara Stewart, Assistant Director Development & Marketing, Arthur Ross Gallery

Virtual Viewing of In our Right Mind: Alzheimer's and Dementia's Impact on Communities of Color

The documentary from Renee Chenault-Fattah, L'82, explores the struggles of families affected by Alzheimer's disease. Chenault-Fattah, a Penn alumna and former anchor for NBC's Philadelphia station, began to see her friends either become caregivers or start to experience cognitive issues themselves shortly after turning 60. In the US, Black people are twice as likely as white people to develop Alzheimer's disease or other dementias, while Hispanics are 1.5 times as likely. The film follows two families' struggle to balance their caregiving duties with their daily lives and memories of who their loved ones once were. It also travels across the country with researchers looking at the specific effects of Alzheimers in communities of color and exploring ways to fight the disease without a cure. This event is part of 2020 Year of the Nurse and Midwife. Please join Renee Chenault Fattah, L’82 and Nancy Hodgson, Professor at Penn Nursing (Gerontology) as they discuss the documentary while watching the film. Introduction by Antonia M. Villarruel, Dean of Nursing
