Virtual Talk with Historic Preservation alumna, Monica Rhodes (MSHP'12), Professor Randall Mason, and Architecture alumnus Mark Gardner (March'00) on preserving the legacy of civil rights history, and the creation of a new center at the Weitzman School focused on the preservation of civil rights sites.
Join us on the journey of a collection as it makes its way from the collector, to a curator, to a professor, and finally into the hands of students. Curator Lynne Farrington, Professor Julie Davis, students, and collector Arthur Tress will share how his remarkable collection of 1400 Japanese illustrated books came to Penn and are making an impact on scholarly, artistic, and learning communities at the University and beyond. Arthur and Julie will talk about some of the masterpieces in the collection, including books on kabuki theater, landscape, poetry, calligraphy, kimono design, and more, designed by famous artists like Katsushika Hokusai, Kawamura Bunpo, Utagawa Kunisada, and Kamisaka Sekka. This program is co-sponsored by the Penn Libraries, Penn Alumni Education, and Penn Alumni Travel and is part of the Global Discovery Series.
Using his latest book,
Understanding Perennials, as a starting point,
Bill Cullina, The F. Otto Haas Executive Director, Morris Arboretum, tackles the thorny subject of garden design in a completely different way. Join Bill as he explores such things as the reasons for big leaves, variegation, red foliage and flowers, and ways to create more satisfying designs without breaking the budget. He will look at life beyond the color wheel, the importance of healthy soil, and will reveal some of his best horticultural secrets while weaving together aesthetics, psychology, botany, and ecology into one fascinating ride. It is a talk that beginning gardeners as well as seasoned pros will both learn from and enjoy.
